While more and more products are treated as disposable, the Baden-Baden–based company Shoedoc stands for the exact opposite: preserve instead of replace.
The company combines traditional shoemaking craftsmanship with a digital platform through which repairs, cleaning, and restorations can be conveniently commissioned online. What sounds simple at first solves a problem many people know well: getting a shoe repaired has often become cumbersome, as traditional cobbler's workshops increasingly disappear.
Yet many forms of damage are by no means a reason to discard a pair of shoes. Worn-down soles, damaged heel linings, or loose stitching can frequently be repaired. Especially with high-quality shoes or cherished everyday companions, a repair can be the far more sustainable alternative to buying new.
Shoedoc was founded by the Baden-Baden bespoke shoe manufactory Vickermann & Stoya. There, over many years, they observed a growing demand for repairs — including for shoes that did not originate from their own workshop. From this development came the idea of making the repair service accessible to customers across all of Germany via a digital platform.
But there is more behind the concept than craftsmanship alone. It is about the question of how durable products should be used in the future. While the number of cobbler's workshops declines, awareness of sustainability and resource conservation is growing at the same time. Shoedoc sees this not as a short-lived trend, but as a long-term shift.
Perhaps the most striking insight of all is a very simple one: the most sustainable shoe is often not the newly purchased one, but the one you already own.
